Jewel of Serengeti

Bedazzling the muted hues of the dusty East African plains, a lilac breasted roller touches down on the tip of a thorny acacia, where it displays an almost unbelievable palette of colours. Rollers get their name by their territorial flight behavior: Flying straight up into the air as high as thirty feet, then turning and diving sharply down again, levelling off its flight and rolling its body to the right and left. This display can be repeated as many as six times in a matter of seconds. It warns intruders near the nest site or challenges competing males.
